What Is Court-Ordered Therapy?

What Is Court-Ordered Therapy?

Court-ordered therapy is counseling that a judge, court, or agency requires as part of a legal matter. Instead of choosing therapy on your own, the court directs you to attend sessions — usually with a licensed therapist — and expects proof that you completed them.

Who gets referred to court-ordered therapy?

  • Parents involved in custody or family court cases
  • Individuals referred by a criminal court or probation
  • Anyone whose attorney recommends counseling as part of a legal strategy

What happens in sessions?

Sessions look much like regular therapy: one-on-one meetings focused on the goals named in your court order or referral. Depending on your situation, that may mean working on communication, accountability, coping skills, parenting, anger management, or substance-related concerns. Sessions are structured, practical, and focused on real change you can show.

How long does it last?

It depends on the order. Some orders set a number of sessions; others run until the referring court or attorney is satisfied with your progress. Your therapist will review the order with you at the start so you know exactly what's expected.

Will the court get a report?

Yes — that's a key difference from private therapy. With court-ordered therapy, your therapist provides documentation or progress reports to the referring court or attorney, as required. What gets shared, and with whom, is explained to you before treatment begins.

Can court-ordered therapy help a custody case?

It can. Courts look favorably on parents who take the process seriously, attend consistently, and show genuine progress. Completing court-ordered therapy demonstrates accountability and a commitment to your family's well-being.
